Chicago History Forum: A. L. of A. -local organization?

Does anyone know what the A.L. of A. was or is? I have a small magnifying glass, maybe used by a jeweler, in a leather case. Made in Germany, but is engraved with A.L. of A., Local Four, Chicago, ILL., 75th Anniversary.
My great grandfather lived in Chicago at the time of the great fire but I imagine this is newer than that. Any help will be appreciated.
